Finding Your Identity in Christ
Who are you? This is not an easy question to answer.. Most often, we think of our identities based on our upbringing, experiences, relationships, and dreams. But when we turn to Scripture, we discover a different standard for defining who we truly are.
God knows you
First, our lives and identities are gifts from God. When we were born into this world, we were given a set of unique characteristics and gifts to be used for God’s glory. Through the events we experience, however, our real identities often get muddled by false messages of who we are.
The truth is, God created us for His divine purpose and He has plans to prosper us, not harm us, and give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29: 11).
God knows us even before we are created (Jeremiah 1:4-55). He has set us on a path to realize our life’s meaning (Psalm 139: 16).
You are a new creation
The good news is that when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are granted the right to be called a child of God and a citizen of Heaven (Philippians 3:20). Therefore, you are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and your identity in Christ is sealed. We will begin to feel a new sense of contentment in who we are because we know we are a child of God and that He is the source of our satisfaction (Matthew 5:6). It also helps us feel ambivalent towards sin and worldly kinds of ambition because we know we are set in a new place that defines fulfillment according to a new standard.
This does not mean we are robbed of our free-will. We do not become a robot adhering to all of His commands. But we do become a changed person who finds delight in doing God’s will. God will gradually transform us into the best and truest version of ourselves as we accept His call to be His servants (Matthew 28:19).
The essence of finding our true identity is knowing who we are in Christ. Only then… will we experience the fullness of the abundant life Jesus came to give us!
